A Look at the Last 50 Years of Advertising

The last fifty years in advertising has brought us many developments. We have seen so many interesting campaigns and so many creative advertising promotions. It is hard to think of all of them. But some of them truly stand out as real winners. Some of think of watching television and remembering the television shows we loved – but while we have been watching television, we have been watching advertisements!

One of the most popular advertisements running for more than forty years are the Doublemint twins. For Doublemint gum, the Doublemint twins have appeared in various commercials. Always pretty, happy, spunky and blonde – they race through life happily chewing gum. We are lead to believe that if we chew Doublemint gum we will lead pretty, happy, spunky and blonde lives as well. Hey – it could happen!

Also very popular for more than fifty years are the advertisements for Coca-Cola. These advertisements have changed over the years. One of their most popular slogans was “Coke is it!” There also was “I wish I could buy the world a Coke,” which featured many people singing this happy Christmas-carol styled song over the years. In recent years winter Coca-Cola commercials have featured polar bears for the past five years. Coca-Cola has been said to be so successful with its advertising that it no longer needs to advertise its product in order to be successful. That people immediately select this brand from its popular reputation and delicious taste.

V-8 commercials have been popular for more than thirty years. Their popular slogan “I could have had a V-8!” has been running for a very long time. Reminding people that they could have had a healthy drink instead of eating or drinking something unhealthy. V-8 is certainly one of the most popular healthy drinks available on the market today.

It is clear that many people pay attention to advertising. Whether you buy the product or not, the advertisement still has some impact on you. It enters your psyche and becomes a part of you. You remember it. You sing its jingle or remember its slogan. You see the product in the store and remember the commercial for it. Sometimes we even look forward to seeing the commercial because it is so memorable and enjoyable.

That is when advertising has done its job. When we are attracted to the message that is selling the product. When we are welcoming this message so much into our lives, into our homes. And we have welcomed these messages for years. Americans now watch more television in today’s life than in any other previous generation. It is clear that they are absorbing more and more commercials. Giving them ample opportunity to be open to more advertisers’ messages. Advertising’s fine history is certainly safe in the hands of the American public that eagerly looks forward to the next sixty second spot! We all want to see the next Doublemint twins commercial, or the next Coke commercial. Americans love advertising. It is part of our culture.
