Living with an Ocean View
More and more I try not to but living in the city it’s hard to avoid traffic if you ever leave your house or try to get out of town. I admit it, I get stuck in traffic often. In the winter especially while stuck in gridlock, I find myself day dreaming about giving it all up and trading it in for a new home living in a beachfront Maui condo. Then reality kicks in, traffic moves forward and 20 minutes later I’m downtown in a grey cold Portland, Oregon. While this summer has been pretty good, the weather has averaged about 83 here over the last couple weeks. Barely any rain to speak. Although we all know its coming. It’s going to rain and it’s going to rain a lot. What is the average rain fall in Oregon you might ask? A few feet! Approximately 36 inches per year dumps on Portland. Thats double the 18 inches per year that Makena or Wailea Maui receives. Don’t get me wrong, I love the rain. Rain brings snow and snow is good for our economy and my sanity.
But, until we pack it up here and sell our home in Portland, I’m going to have to settle for this as my Maui Ocean view. Which is actually some one else’s view from their condo in Wailea. Sometimes I check on this view and other a couple other Maui web cams a few times a day. This is one of our favorite Maui beaches… it’s a secret ![]()

Last April we were fortunate to be able to have a nice little get away in Wailea. We stayed in at the Royal Mauiian in Kihei for a few days then finished the trip up with a few days in South Maui at The Wailea Grand Champions. While we were there we checked out the prices of Maui condos for sale and a few of the homes. Even though we knew we weren’t moving to Hawaii anytime soon I always find it interesting to check out the value of homes in other parts of the United States.
While living in Maui sounds fun and all that, it’s important to remember everything on an Island cost more. Mainly because everything needs to be imported from some where else. Hawaii didn’t have cows until early explorers and traders brought them there. That and a lot of other things Hawaii didn’t need, but thats a whole other blog post and topic.
